Indiana: Being Nice Matters

Laine and I are currently in Lawrence, Kansas, hanging out in a cool, slightly hipster cafe on the main drag called Henry's.  This means we're nearly halfway across the country already!  So far we've driven about 1500 miles since Tuesday, not a bad haul.
Still relatively fresh, only Day 2

Anyway, the past few days have been great.  After driving to Niagara Falls on the first day we managed to get as far as Erie, PA before crashing.  The next day Laine got up super early (7:30am!) and drove us the entire way across Ohio, a pretty impressive push.

Laine and a pile of sausage gravy
We eventually found a place to stop in Howe, Indiana (population: 4330) where we stopped for lunch at the simply named Howe Restaurant.  The place turned out to be awesome, with tons of random American flags and a sign near the bathroom that read "Being Nice Matters".

Turns out people in Indiana really are nice.   PJ, our server, stopped by at one point to tell us about his car (which was apparently awesome).  The owner, a guy named Angelo, actually pulled up a chair and sat down with us for nearly half an hour, telling us about his political platform if he were to run for President (including an ambitious plan to inject all immigrants to the US with radioactive dye to track their whereabouts, which according to him was not terrifying at all).  Angelo assured us he was no criminal and even gave us a couple of free blue coffee mugs plastered with local ads!

Completely stuffed and overwhelmed by the local flavor, we finished up the day with a 3 hour drive to Chicago.

Next post: A giant silver bean!

  1. It's all about food, huh? Hey, if you pass by Wilson KS, make a stop - it's the Czech capital of America (or at least the Great Plains), and sure to have good dumplings!
